History of the day of the dictionary:
The earliest recorded dictionaries date back to Sumerian times around 2300 BCE, in the form of bilingual dictionaries, and the oldest surviving monolingual dictionaries are Chinese dictionaries c. 3rd century BCE. The first purely English alphabetical dictionary was A Table Alphabetical, written in 1604, and monolingual dictionaries in other languages also began to appear in Europe around this time.
The man we know today as the father of the dictionary in the United States was Noah Webster, born October 16, 1758 in Hartford, Connecticut. His father was a farmer and craftsman, and his mother was a housewife, they all led a very bourgeois and typical colonial family. At age 16, Noah left for Yale, Connecticut’s first college. Since law was too expensive a career path at the time, Noah chose to pursue teaching.
It was in education that he first felt compelled to reform America’s burgeoning academic system and language. His first textbook was published in 1783 which covered the grammar of the English language. After marrying Rebecca Greenleaf in 1789, he set out in 1801 to define many of the terms that distinguished American English from the way the language was spoken in England.
Many of us are familiar with the spelling differences between English and American words like “color.” Much of this can be attributed to Webster, who in his first edition of the American English Dictionary in 1806 took the time to correct English spellings in American English. After Webster’s death in 1843, he was considered an American hero who pioneered the dictionary and differentiated American English from British English.
Meaning of the day from the dictionary:
Dictionary Day, also known as National Dictionary Day, celebrates the legacy created by Noah Webster. A tribute is paid to him on his birthday for all his contributions to the revolution of American English. As he was not only the first to write a dictionary on specific American English, he was also instrumental in defining American English apart from British English. He is therefore considered a very important figure in American history.
A dictionary is very important for the development and promotion of any language. One of the main reasons why English is a global language today can also be attributed to its wide promotion through trade and knowledge sharing. And English has been very lucky that a league has focused on promoting it in the past in the form of poetry, dictionaries, or other texts. The dictionary also helps in further language development.
Obviously, the dictionary is a fantastic resource for new words. For centuries it has been used to define the English language and has given us a common rulebook for communication. Almost every time you turn to a new page in the dictionary, you learn something new! So, if you want to increase your vocabulary, a dictionary can be very helpful for you. It also helps you fall more in love with the language.
However, more than native speakers, the dictionary plays a major role in language learning for non-English speakers and thus helps to increase the global reach of the English language. Through the use of dictionaries, people with different native languages can find it very easy to learn and understand English or any other language. So, a dictionary is very important in communication for our world as it helps to reduce the communication gap of our world by helping people to learn other languages.
