SHARJAH, 25th May, 2022 (WAM) — Speakers at a panel discussion hosted by Sharjah Arabic Language Academy as part of its participation in the 31st Abu Dhabi International Book Fair enjoyed the attention given by H.H. Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, for the protection of the Arabic language, embodied in the completion of the Arabic Historical Dictionary Project.
The symposium, held at the youth platform of the exhibition under the theme “The role of the historical dictionary of the Arabic language in documenting the evolution of terminology through the ages and migratory words” , was attended by Dr. Muhammad Safi Al Mosteghanemi, Secretary General of the Arabic Language Academy (ALA) in Sharjah and Executive Director of the Arabic Historical Dictionary.
Dr. Al Mosteghanemi opened his participation in the symposium by noting that the rationale for working in the historical dictionary of the Arabic language sets it apart from other ancient dictionaries, due to its role in chronicling the words of the Arabic language and of the context in which their meanings developed at different times, to include 18 centuries.
As for Dr. Al Sheikh, he reviewed the unique features of the dictionary that enhance its scientific and cognitive importance, including the temporal extension covered by the dictionary to include Arabic words at the pre-Islamic stage of 400 years.
