Library organizations appeal to e-book sellers to remove fascist propaganda
Libraries Freedom Project and The future of libraries demand “responsibility for Hoopla Digital and OverDrive regarding the fascist propaganda platform in their digital library collections.” They state, “Without proper quality control and source verification, these vendors are disseminating propaganda, including Holocaust denial material and other false rhetoric, and making it available to customers in form of non-fiction e-books. We demand full accountability for how these materials were selected for inclusion on platforms and more transparency in companies’ materials selection processes in the future. These documents do not belong to a popular public library collection. We call on our fellow librarians to join us in this call for accountability from our suppliers. »
The organizations share that as of February 17, “Hoopla has removed many of these titles, but the company must answer for the content policies that led to the inclusion of these titles in the first place. At the time of writing of this statement [on Feb. 22]OverDrive still offers these titles on their marketplace.
