Mission Opera “The 13 Clocks” from the 1950 fantasy novel by James Thurber
MissionOpera will present “The13Clocks” – a world premiere opera in English, by Los Angeles-based composer David Avshalomov and based on a popular children’s fantasy novel by James Thurber on June 10 and 11, 2022 at 7:30 p.m. each evening at the Canyon Center for the Arts in Santa Clarita High School show.
“The13 Clocks” is a charming fairy tale filled with magic and absurdity, imagination and escapism. In this fantasy, a mysterious prince, Zorn of Zorna, must complete a seemingly impossible task to rescue Princess Saralinda from the cold-hearted duke who stole her as a baby. This never-before-seen work features a live orchestra (piano, flutes, and percussion) plus an incredible cast of Los Angeles-based singers, including Gabriel Manro, Chris Hunter, Ben Lowe, Tiffany Ho, Phil Meyer, Alexis Wesley, and Suite!
The production is directed by Mission Opera’s Artistic Director, Dr. Joshua Wentz, and features animation and multimedia design by Aaron Ball of Command VirFormance. “This show is a treat for families with kids of all ages,” says Ball, who is working on developing a video design to project onto a 60′ LED screen on stage. “Although it’s a bit dark, it really is a classic fairy tale for the ages.” The whole show will last 2 hours and 10 minutes, including 15 minutes of intermission.
Mission Opera will continue to enforce COVID protocols based on all guidelines and mandates from the State of California, Los Angeles County, and Wm. S. Hart School District. In the event of any change, CDC protocols at the time of the show will be strictly followed.
The hands of thirteen clocks come to rest in the dark castle on a lonely hill where an evil Duke lives with his niece, the beautiful Princess Saralinda. The Duke believes he has frozen time, because he fears that one day a prince will come to win the hand of the princess, the only warm hand in the castle. To thwart this fate, he assigns impossible tasks to Saralinda’s suitors. But when the daring Prince Zornof Zorna arrives, disguised as a wandering minstrel and aided by the enigmatic Golux, the cold duke may have finally met his match.
