New “OverDrive Max” access model reduces library costs for eBook and audiobook collections

Purchasing bulk inventories of select titles with flexible access provides improved ROI for libraries

CLEVELAND, April 13, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — As part of its continued promotion of libraries, today Overdrive released a growing list of publishers who now offer “Max Overdrive“, an e-book access model for schools and libraries developed to meet growing reader demand. Under the OverDrive Max model (also known as metered concurrency), libraries can store up to 100 loans for popular eBooks with no expiration date. With each Max title, the cost to serve each reader is generally the lowest cost available to libraries and schools for loaning the eBook or audio book.

“OverDrive Max allows librarians to reserve inventory of select digital books, often at the lowest cost per loan, and eliminates issues associated with collection access times,” said Karen Estrovich, Senior Director of Public Libraries at OverDrive. “It’s a time-saver and a cost-effective option for serving the maximum number of readers with a library’s budget. It’s perfect for student summer programs, book clubs, and community reading events. ”

E-book and audiobook publishers offering catalogs in the OverDrive Max model include Blackstone Publishing, Lerner Publishing Group, RBMedia/Recorded Books, Christian Audio, Britannica Digital Learning, Allen & Unwin, Springer Nature, Open Road Media, Rosen Publishing , Bearport Publishing and dozens of others. OverDrive Max complements the “cost per circulation” model that leading publishers offer OverDrive Marketplace libraries and schools, including Penguin Random House, HarperCollins, Simon & Schuster and others.

“Being able to manage collections for our readers with this model has improved our engagement with readers,” said Beth Godlewski, Senior Collections Specialist at the Toronto Public Library. “This cost-effective purchase option contributed to the Toronto Public Library’s record annual circulation of 9.8 million digital titles in 2021.”
