Pump Expert Reveals New On-Farm AD Plant Protector and Biogas Booster
Described as a one-step biogas optimization solution, the WANGEN X-UNIT from anaerobic digestion (AD) pump specialist Agrico is claimed to protect anaerobic digestion plants from damage by harmful contaminants while increasing the surface area of the raw material to supercharge the digestion process.
By preventing foreign objects from entering the AD system, the company explains, the X-UNIT protects pumps, mixers, piping and tanks from contaminant damage, while its chopping blades reduce material first AD to a thin, porridge-like consistency, thus optimizing the AD process. . This easy-to-use, energy-efficient system extends the life of valuable equipment, increases operational uptime and maximizes biogas yield, increasing operator results.
“Having seen firsthand the extensive damage caused to downstream equipment by contaminants such as bone, metal, rock and gravel, I am delighted to showcase the new and improved X-UNIT at the World Biogas Expo during its return to the NEC in June,” said Agrico Managing Director John Tame. “Not only can it play an important role in protecting biogas systems, but it helps plant operators extract the maximum yield gas from every tonne of feedstock – essential in today’s climate where competition for feedstock is fierce and gas prices are at an all time high. ”
Modular system adaptable in suction to all brands of volumetric pumps, the X-UNIT consists of two elements: the X-CUT, a high-performance chopper; and the X-TRACT, which separates contaminants from raw materials. As the feedstock passes through the X-TRACT en route to the digester tank, a reduction in speed causes foreign objects to fall into the base of the unit, where they are captured in a settling tank and prevented from entering the wider AD system and subsequently damaging valuable downstream equipment.
Without the X-UNIT to filter out the debris, the foreign contaminants would eventually settle in one place – the floor of the primary digester tank. “An accumulation of solids in the digester can have a big impact on the success of a plant by reducing tank volume, which leads to reduced gas production and directly affects profitability,” says John. “There is also the cost of removing compacted sediment, which can run into the hundreds of thousands of pounds. By preventing solids from entering the AD system in the first place, the X-UNIT protects plant operators from the risk of this costly event.
With a maximum flow volume of 1,250 m3/h, low energy consumption, low wear costs and accessible parts for easy maintenance, the X-UNIT is designed to last. “UK AD plant operators can now protect their investment and optimize their biogas production with the best of German engineering from WANGEN, backed by Agrico’s local sales and field service support,” John adds.
