Personal Health is part of the Real-World Skills series. This series aims to encourage students to think about what they can do to live healthier, happier, and more balanced lives. This series was created to appeal especially to teenagers with funny cartoon characters that students can relate to. Students are given practical tools – in the form of tips and suggestions – to successfully cope with everyday physical, emotional and safety issues and situations. Each book has an “expert” character who shares their wisdom throughout each story as well as several teenage characters who receive special “Teen Tips” via text message at the end of each story.
The purpose of this book is to let students know that they can take control of at least some aspect of their physical health and well-being. Each story focuses on something that has a direct impact on how our body works. Through a series of real life scenarios, students learn the consequences of eating junk foods, not getting enough sleep, exercising too much or not enough, smoking, drinking and using drugs. They also learn moderation and the benefits of eating a balanced diet and finding the exercise they enjoy. Each story is between 388 and 488 words long. The reading level is between 2.6 and 4.1 according to the Flesch-Kincaid readability score.
Two pages of follow-up comprehension questions help reinforce learning. The first page of questions asks students to go back in the text to find information. This is good preparation for the more difficult skill-specific comprehension questions posed on the second page of questions. The second activity asks questions that align with the common core standards. Each question is labeled to show which standard is met. Students are encouraged to answer the questions in full sentences. The skills table will show which stories meet which common basic standards.
