Star Trek Celebrates “Genesis Trilogy” With New Anniversary Edition Novel (Exclusive Excerpt)

The excerpt provided by Titan reveals a handful of facts about the making of Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, directed by Leonard Nimoy. “Nimoy only faced conflict from the studio regarding the film’s ending,” read one of the facts. “He said star diary magazine in May 1986, ‘Leaders had reservations about ending the picture on Vulcan. I felt this final sequence very strongly. I wanted to end the movie by bringing Spock to Vulcan and going through the ritual. Not to be so familiar [with] star trek, executives did not understand what the streak would mean to the public. They were worried about it and tried to convince me to substitute a different ending. They wanted to end with the dramatic escape from Planet Genesis, get Kirk and Spock aboard the Klingon Bird of Prey, revive Spock in the infirmary, do a little scene, and go home.
“Nimoy’ argued vehemently that the footage should be on Vulcan. Showing Spock on his home planet, among his own, trying to remember his friends, would be a moving scene. I managed to convince them that I wanted to do it my way, and they agreed. I didn’t discuss the film with them again until I showed them my first cut.
