Tom Hanks reveals the cover and plot details of his new novel
Tom Hanks writes what he knows.
The double Oscar winner wrote his first novel, The making of another major cinematic masterpiecereleased May 9, 2023, about the movie industry and the making of a “colossal, star-studded, multimillion-dollar superhero action movie and the humble comic book that inspired it”, according to an official synopsis.
Hanks, 66, tells PEOPLE the plot is inspired by his personal experiences in Hollywood.
“Each character in the book does something that I experienced while making a movie, as well as discovered a philosophy or learned an important lesson. Even the insane moments are kind of a stunt I made or a mistake I made. survived.” he says.
The making of another major cinematic masterpiece spans several decades and showcases American culture changed since World War II. Part of it is set in 1947, about a soldier returning from war who leaves a lasting impression on his talented 5-year-old nephew. This boy grew up drawing comics in 1970, making his uncle one of his characters.
Then, in the present day, a director decides to adapt this comic into a big-budget superhero movie. Characters in the book include an “extremely difficult” male actor and a “wonderful” lead actress, as well as an “eccentric” director, producer, production assistant, and more eccentric crew members.

Throughout the novel are comic strips written by Hanks and illustrated by Robert Sikoryak.
“The source of a film can go back as many years as there are in history. A story revolves around a single moment in someone’s life, then all the anecdotes of the current day magnify this moment,” says Hanks. “Going back to 1947 makes sense, as it would have started in, say, 1559. Human desire has proven to be timeless.”
“Nobody knows how a movie is made – even if everyone thinks they do,” he adds. “I’ve done a ton of movies (and four of them are pretty good I think) and I’m always amazed at how the movies come together. From the flicker of an idea to the flicker of an image to the screen, the whole process is a miracle.”
Hanks, who also wrote the 2017 hit short story collection Uncommon Typesays, “Filmmaking is very hard work over a very long period of time that consists of so many moments of joy slapped against an equal number of feelings of self-loathing. It’s the greatest job in the world and the most confusing work I know of. I hope the book captures as much of the “accidental judgments and occasional slaughter” that goes into a cinematic saying to hold “a mirror to nature” that I have witnessed (and caused) since I joined the Screen Actors Guild.”
