Lawrence County Public Library (LCPL) joins more than 16,000 public libraries and colleges as well as tens of thousands of readers across the United States to offer the latest award-winning selection from the Together We Read: US digital book club.

From February 7 to 21, LCPL customers can enjoy author Kirstin Valdez Quade’s award-winning debut novel of 2021, The Five Wounds, in eBook and audiobook form. Readers can access the eBook for free with no waitlists or holds by downloading the Libby app or visiting http://camellia.lib.overdrive.com and participating in an online discussion.

The Together We Read: US digital book club connects readers at thousands of US public libraries and universities with the same ebook for two weeks. Lawrence County readers only need a valid LCPL card to get started.

This free program is powered by OverDrive, the leading digital reading platform for e-books, audiobooks, and magazines and creator of the award-winning Libby app.

“We’re very excited about America’s Digital Book Club,” said LCPL Director Rex Bain, “because customers can read or listen to this title right away.”

The Five Plagues take place during Holy Week in the small town of Las Penas, New Mexico, and thirty-three-year-old unemployed Amadeo Padilla has been given the role of Jesus in the Good Friday procession. He is feverishly preparing for the role when his fifteen-year-old daughter Angel shows up pregnant on his doorstep and disrupts his plans for personal redemption. Weeks away from her due date, the tough and exuberant Angel fled her mother’s house, setting her life on a surprising new path.

The five wounds span the baby’s first year as five generations of the Padilla family converge: Amadeo’s mother, Yolanda, reeling from a recent discovery; Angel’s mother, Marissa, whom Angel does not speak to; and disapproving Tíve, Yolanda’s uncle and keeper of the family history.

The Five Wounds is published as an e-book by WW Norton & Company and as an audiobook by HighBridge Audio.

The digital book can be borrowed at participating US libraries and colleges during the Together We Read program between February 7 and February 21. The eBook and audiobook can be read on all major computers and devices, including iPhone®, iPad®, Android™ phones and tablets, and Chromebook™ with no waitlists or reservations.

Using Libby, readers can also “send to Kindle®” (US libraries only). The title will automatically expire at the end of the loan period, and there are no late fees.
