What is the trend for urban dictionary names?

A sticker on Instagram asks users to type their name in Urban Dictionary and post the definition that appears.

The sticker, which says “Show us your name in the urban dictionary,” has an “Add yours” so others can join.

Some name definitions are crude and unflattering, while others are complementary and uplifting.

For example, when you search for the name Phil, the urban dictionary gives:

“Phil is an amazing guy in every way! Extremely good looking, and most girls find it almost impossible to resist his charms! Extremely funny and can make the whole room laugh in minutes! Take no shit in person and will tell you exactly what he thinks and what he thinks. He is extremely good at his hobbies. Master of everything. Can turn to anything.

A Marina is described as “the most beautiful girl you have ever seen in your life.” Just seeing her makes your heart stop and flip. Marina is kind, caring, calm and the most perfect girl you have ever seen.

However, Brian is defined as “a very sensitive boy who likes to watch movies in the dark. He also gets angry when playing games and sometimes gets angry.”

What is the urban dictionary?

Urban Dictionary is a “participatory online dictionary for slang words and phrases not typically found in standard dictionaries”.

Founded in 1999 by Aaron Peckham, its motto is Define Your World.

Peckham reportedly launched the site to compare urban slang used by college students in different parts of California.

He then claimed to have developed the platform as a parody of actual dictionaries that are “stuffy” and “take themselves too seriously”.

One of the site’s earliest definitions was “man,” which the site defined as “the faces of the establishment set up to take us down.”

It is now reported that around 2,000 words are added daily, with definitions exceeding at least 12 million on the site as of 2020.
